SFX Make-up

As I mentioned this morning, I am going to run a workshop on SFX makeup. I think that this will help learner make connections with each other as they will have to share equipment and use each other as models for some of the looks. Different skin tones and colours in particular will be great for this as at some point, everyone will have to work on a skin tone different to their own - both sides can then discuss what techniques work best and pass on tips and tricks to each other. I will also learn quite a lot from this as I have worked exclusively on Asian and white skin (and very pale white skin at that - or fake tan! - Scotland!) and it will be a great learning experience for me to have the learners teach me what works best on their skin.

I also think that this will help build character in that each and every learner will have to work responsibly with the gear provided as well as being aware of and understanding of their model's comfort and making sure that they address this while practicing. Awareness of our effect on others is an important skill that I think is sometimes missing in teens and (hopefully) we can build on from awareness of physical effect to emotional quite quickly - which also ties in to some of the 'looks' we will be creating.

I hope to cover burns and bruises, scars, bites and claw marks, aging makeup, exposed bones (trauma) and a few other bits and pieces as well as letting the learners research and design their own sfx once they are more used to the gear - hopefully we could then have a little catwalk show with their final designs!

In the meantime, please let me know if you have any comments, thoughts, ideas...
